Computing Time-Varying Sex-Age-Specific Rates of Marriage/Union Formation and Dissolution in Family Household Projection or Simulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article presents two procedures that are useful in both macro and micro projection/simulation models concerning marriage/union formation and dissolution. One is for computing time-varying sex-age-specific rates that are consistent with independently projected life course propensities of marriage/union formation and dissolution in the one-sex life course simulation model. Another one is for computing time-varying sex-age-specific rates that are consistent with the two-sex constraints and with independently projected summary measures of marriage/union formation and dissolution in the two-sex family household projection model. Illustrative numerical examples based on U.S. data demonstrate that the proposed procedures are valid. 1 Zeng Yi is Research Professor at the Center for Demographic Studies and the Department of Sociology of Duke University ([email protected]), Professor of China Center for Economic Research at Peking University, and Distinguished Research Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. 2 Eric Stallard is Research Professor and Associate Director of the Center for Demographic Studies at Duke University. 3 Zhenglian Wang is Research Associate of the Center for Demographic Studies at Duke University. How do marriage market conditions affect entrance into cohabitation vs. marriage?
Widening gaps in marriage rates have received a great deal of attention in recent years, focusing on the availability of marriageable men in the local marriage market. At the same time, cohabitation has increased in prevalence, playing a role in declining marriage rates. This paper extends marriage market arguments to the formation of both cohabiting and marital unions, using contextual data at...

This study contributes to the emerging demographic literature on same-sex couples by comparing the level and correlates of union stability among four types of couples: male same-sex cohabitation, female same-sex cohabitation, different-sex cohabitation, and different-sex marriage. I analyze data from two British birth cohort studies, the National Child Development Study (N = 11,469) and the 197...

METHOD Using demographic surveillance data collected from 2001 to 2011, relationship status was cat...
متن کاملIncome dynamics in couples and the dissolution of marriage and cohabitation.
Several studies have shown that a wife's strong (socio)economic position is associated with an increase in the risk of divorce. Less is known about such effects for cohabiting relationships. Using a unique and large-scale sample of administrative records from The Netherlands, we analyze the link between couples' income dynamics and union dissolution for married and cohabiting unions over a 10-y...
